LITERACY:

We are continuing to use the Journey's curriculum. This encompasses spelling, reading, grammar, and writing. The students will be taught in whole and small groups. We will also be using Scholastic News and trade books. Please keep in mind that we are not doing a traditional Monday-Friday schedule. We are rotating every 6 days or so on a new unit so things like Spelling tests will be given 5 days after the list is sent home, unlike the typical "Friday test." If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher.

MATH:

This year we are continuing to use the Everyday Math series. We will be starting Unit 9. Unit 9 covers multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10, multi-digit multiplication, problem solving and elapsed time.

Please continue to work on those basic math facts - addition, subtraction, and multiplication! Math life will be so much easier and stronger for the students if they are fluent in their math facts. Spending 5-10 minutes a day can greatly improve the automaticity of math facts. Xtramath is an easy way for the students to practice and can be accessed by clicking the link above. If you don't have internet or computer access at home flash cards are also a great thing to use.

Science with Mrs. Garrison:

Mrs. Garrison will be teaching Science for all three sections of third grade. Students will rotate out every four weeks. This week Mrs. Wright's class started learning about animals and habitats from long ago.

Social Studies with Mrs. Volk:

Mrs. Volk will be teaching Social Studies for all three sections of third grade. Students will rotate every four weeks. Our last few units will focus on immigrants and the introduction of the automobile. My students started their final writing rotation. Mrs. Garrison's class will be learning about the introduction of the automobile.

Writing with Mrs. Wright~
Students in Mrs. Volk's homeroom section are writing narratives.

MRS. VOLK

Please continue to encourage reading at home. This is something that should happen all summer! :)

Please, please, please have your kids practice their basic math facts. This practice should include addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Xtramath can help with this!

MRS. GARRISON

Don't forget to sign up for SeeSaw so you can see some of your child's work! I'm trying to include a little of both Math and Reading.

We will finish out Unit 9 for homelinks!

No more spelling tests this year.

Try to encourage reading at home! We are sharing the good books we are reading each morning trying to build on the love of reading!

Thank you all for your support and have a great week!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have!amy.garrison@vmbulldogs.com

Mrs. Wright:
  • Students may practice Lesson 26 words with the VCCV pattern. There will be no formal assessment over this list.
  • No more weekly fluency passages.
  • Reading calendars- The goal is for your child to read 20 minutes per day outside of the school setting. Your child may record his/her reading minutes on the May calendar.
  • Grades will be continuously updated on Infinite Campus. Feel free to email me with any questions regarding Infinite Campus.
  • Thank you once again to all the adult chaperones who were able to attend our field trip to Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge. The day was filled with so much learning, fun, excitement, and curiosity.

Please let me know if you have any questions, thoughts, and/or concerns. ~Mrs. Wright
