Don't forget to SPRING ahead this weekend!

We are still collecting box tops.

Third grade started their PBL project this week. Originally we were planning to finish before spring break but have since realized that we will need more time. We will complete the project the week after break.

This is a good time to check with your child to see if s/he needs any supplies for school. Headphones perhaps?

Thank you to all of our Science Center volunteers. We wouldn't be able to take field trips without your help. A few pictures from our day are below...excuse the 'sideways-ness'! :)

All carnival items were due this week. If you have an item to donate, please send it in as the VMEPC will still accept it. The baskets will be auctioned off at the VMEPC Carnival. All of the money raised goes back to the elementary, so please be sure to support this fun event!

Mrs. Volk's basket theme is YOGA!
Mrs. Garrison's theme is UNI, Iowa State, and Univ. of Iowa
Mrs. Wright's theme is ALL ABOUT SPORTS

Mrs. Volk is open for tutoring this school year. If interested, please contact her directly

Each child has a PIN number to put in and... will need your teacher's email:

We are continuing to use the Journey's curriculum. This encompasses spelling, reading, grammar, and writing. The students will be taught in whole and small groups. We will also be using Scholastic News and trade books. Please keep in mind that we are not doing a traditional Monday-Friday schedule. We are rotating every 6 days or so on a new unit so things like Spelling tests will be given 5 days after the list is sent home, unlike the typical "Friday test." If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher.

This year we are continuing to use the Everyday Math series. We will start unit 7 after break.
Please continue to work on those basic math facts - addition, subtraction, and multiplication! Math life will be so much easier and stronger for the students if they are fluent in their math facts. Spending 5-10 minutes a day can greatly improve the automaticity of math facts. Xtramath is an easy way for the students to practice and can be accessed by clicking the link above. If you don't have internet or computer access at home flash cards are also a great thing to use.

Science with Mrs. Garrison:

Mrs. Garrison will be teaching Science for all three sections of third grade. Students will rotate out every four weeks. I'm back with my own class and we are working on the Power of Flowers! This week we learned about what makes a science fruit or science vegetable!

Social Studies with Mrs. Volk:

Mrs. Volk will be teaching Social Studies for all three sections of third grade. Students will rotate every four weeks. Our last few units will focus on immigrants and the introduction of the automobile. My class has started this final rotation. The students are excited about starting the Goose Chase to learn about immigrants.

Writing with Mrs. Wright~
I am your child's third grade writing teacher. I hope to instill a passion and love for writing amongst all third graders. We'll be writing opinion pieces, informative/explanatory texts & narratives this year. Currently, I'm writing again with my homeroom class. We're working on writing a narrative piece about something real or imagined.

Miss Moore started on Tuesday, March 7th. You should have received an introductory letter from her.

March reading calendars were sent home. Please encourage your child to read each day for at least 10 minutes. The more your child reads, the better his/her reading.

You can always place an order on-line, but please know it won't be received by Scholastic until I finalize it. You can access Scholastic from here...Scholastic Our class code is GXPY2. You are also welcome to send the order back to school with a check written out to Scholastic for me to place your order. Please contact me with questions.
IF you ever want to purchase books as gifts, just let me know in an email (I'm a great secret keeper), and I'll let you know when they arrive.

Please, please, please have your kids practice their basic math facts. This practice should include addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Thank you to our volunteers at the Science Center! I took several pictures but I'm having technical difficulties getting the newsletter to accept the file!

Don't forget to sign up for SeeSaw so you can see some of your child's work! I'm trying to include a little of both Math and Reading.

Math Homelinks will start up again with Unit 7 after break. We will be working through lessons 7-1 through 7-4.

Our spelling test will be on March 27. I will be adding challenge words to those students that have a 100% on their pretest.

We were able to add several new books to our classroom library! You can always place an online order through Scholastic Book Clubs, but please keep in mind that it won't submit until I finalize it with orders I receive at school. You can log on hereScholastic and use our class code N9TPR. You also can send a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs and I can place the order here at school.

Try to encourage reading at home! We are sharing the good books we are reading each morning trying to build on the love of reading!

Thank you all for your support and have a great week!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have!

Mrs. Wright:
  • Our next spelling assessment over words with -ed and -ing will be administered on Monday, March 27th.
  • Fluency practice- each Monday your child will receive a 2-sided handout which will help your child practice his/her fluency at home. Monday through Thursday your child will read the passage to you for 1 minute. Please record how many words per minute your child read in the box provided. You will also note how many mistakes he/she read. This sheet also has comprehension questions on the back. Your child will need to turn this sheet in on Friday mornings with both sides completed. Our next sheet will be titled, "Bearded Dragons".
  • Reading calendars- The goal is for your child to read 20 minutes per day outside of the school setting. Your child will record his/her minutes on the March reading calendar. The March reading calendar is due on Friday, March 31st.
  • THANK YOU to parents who have extra time in their schedules to come into our classroom and volunteer. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
  • Grades will be continuously updated on Infinite Campus. Feel free to email me with any questions regarding Infinite Campus.
  • The weather is constantly changing. Please have your kids dress accordingly for outdoor recess. Thank you!
