We are continuing to use the Journey's curriculum. This encompasses spelling, reading, grammar, and writing. The students will be taught in whole and small groups. We will also be using Scholastic News and trade books. Please keep in mind that we are not doing a traditional Monday-Friday schedule. We are rotating every 6 days or so on a new unit so things like Spelling tests will be given 5 days after the list is sent home, unlike the typical "Friday test." If you have questions, please contact your child's teacher.

This year we are continuing to use the Everyday Math series. Next week we will be completing Lessons 4-8 and 4-9. This unit focuses on measurement and geometry. The Home Links were sent home.

Mrs. Garrison will be teaching Science for all three sections of third grade. Students will rotate out every four weeks. We continued with Stormy Skies this week by trying to predict storms and identifying the different types of clouds.

Mrs. Volk will be teaching Social Studies for all three sections of third grade. Students will rotate every four weeks. We will start out the year learning about Native Americans, Settlers in Jamestown, and Salem, MA. My class will be back in Social Studies beginning next Tuesday.

Writing with Mrs. Wright~

I am your child's third grade writing teacher. I hope to instill a passion and love for writing amongst all third graders. We'll be writing opinion pieces, informative/explanatory texts & narratives this year. I'll use explicit instruction to teach Anita Archer's Summary Writing Strategy with my homeroom section. Please let me know if you have any questions as to what we're practicing in writing class.

The November reading calendars are due. The December calendar has been sent home. Please remember that your child set their own goal. Please encourage them to meet or exceed that reading goal.

Remember the math HomeLinks. We will be completing lessons 4-8 and 4-9 next week.

Miss V. will finish up her two week bell-to-bell teaching, and her last day is December 9th. We will be having a little going away party for her on the 9th.

Next week our class will be completing a STEM project with Mrs. James. We have been discussing what resources help communities thrive. We will discuss what goods and services Van Meter offers and what the students think Van Meter needs in order to become a larger, thriving community. The students will then engineer a community out of graham crackers, icing, and other delicious snacks. After our construction is complete, the students will skype with another group of students and share their communities with each other. This is sure to be a delicious crowd pleaser! We will post pictures of our construction phase and the completed community.

If you wish to do the Homelinks in Math we will be doing lessons 4-6 through 4-9.

Our spelling test will be on December 5. I will be adding challenge words to those students that have a 100% on their pretest.
